EV Charging Stations: AC and DC Chargers
Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations mainly come in two types: Alternating Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC). They differ primarily by where the energy conversion occurs. As EV adoption grows, infrastructure expands with more AC chargers in urban areas and DC fast chargers on motorways.
AC Chargers
Conversion:
Deliver AC to the vehicle; the DC conversion takes place inside the EV using its onboard charger.
Speed:
Usually slower than DC chargers.
Types:
- Level 1: Use standard household outlets (230 V in Europe and India); power ranges from 3 kW and 7.5 kW; suitable for overnight charging.
- Level 2: Use higher voltage outlets (400 V in Europe and India); up to 22 kW; ideal for home, workplace, or public charging during extended parking sessions.
Benefits:
- Cost-effective to install and maintain.
- Gentle on battery health owing to slower charging.
Selecting the right type depends on your needs:
- AC: Suitable for daily use, home, or workplace charging, emphasising convenience and battery longevity.
- DC: Crucial for fast, long-distance travel.
DC Chargers
Conversion:
Equipped with an internal AC-to-DC converter, allowing direct power flow to the battery.
Speed:
Significantly faster, capable of charging up to 80% in about 30–60 minutes.
Power Output:
Ranges from 25 kW to 350 kW for rapid charging.
Use Cases:
- Highway and major route chargers for long-distance travel.
- Commercial and fleet vehicles requiring quick turnaround.
